About Kuba Cloth Kuba cloth, traditionally made from raffia palm fibres, come in various lengths and are considered a significant art form from this region. Originating in the 17th century in the Kuba kingdom of Central Africa, now the Democratic Republic of Congo, these cloths are a key cultural export from the area. The process of making Kuba cloth involves stripping and softening the raffia fibres, dyeing them with vegetable dyes to create colors like ivory, brown, clay red, and indigo blue, and weaving them into a flat weave textile on a heddle loom. Male weavers usually handle the weaving, while finishing touches are added by Kuba women. These decorative techniques can include embroidery, appliqués, or patchwork, and result in a cut pile cloth.
